How to choose a branding agency in the Midwest

How to choose a branding agency in the Midwest, using the 15 firms on this list and only the fields recorded for them.

What you are hiring

A branding agency is hired for positioning, identity and the system that keeps both consistent. The expensive mistake is buying a logo when the problem is that the company cannot say what it is for.

Ask where the work stops. A strategy deck, a visual identity, and a set of templates the team can actually use are three different endings. Price follows the ending.

Decide this before you call

Write these down before you talk to a branding agency. A vague brief produces a vague price.

  • Say whether the problem is the strategy, the look, or the fact that nobody uses either.
  • Name who is allowed to decide. Brand projects stall when everyone has a vote.
  • Bring the places the identity has to live: site, sales deck, product, sign, packaging.
  • Decide whether renaming is in play. Say so at the start.

Questions worth asking

Ask each firm the same list. The useful part is the difference in the answers, not a polished version of the question.

  • Do you start with the words or with the visual system, and why for a company like ours?
  • What will our team be able to make without you when this is over?
  • Who does the strategy, and who designs? Are they the same person?
  • What is not included: website, packaging, guidelines, a launch?
  • Can you show a system a client still uses, not only the launch case?

Hiring in the Midwest

the Midwest covers several states. Firms in different states can all belong on this list and still differ on price, travel and who shows up. State and city pages count where the listed firms are based. They do not rank cities.

A region named on a homepage is not the same thing as an office in your city. Use the city and state on the profile.

What this list shows

15 branding agencies are on the ranked list in the Midwest, checked September 28, 2026. They are based in Minneapolis, MN (3); Chicago, IL (2); Kansas City, MO (2); Omaha, NE (2); St. Louis, MO (2); Cincinnati, OH (1); Columbus, OH (1); Madison, WI (1), and 1 more cities.

Where a team size is stated: 4 are 1–10 people, 6 are 11–50 people, 3 are 51–200 people. 2 do not state a size.

15 of 15 state a founding year. The earliest stated year is 1978 and the latest is 2011.

14 of 15 have a named leader on the profile. 14 of 15 name at least one client. 0 of 15 publish a price on their own site or on Clutch. Where a field is missing, no source stated it, and this site does not fill it in.

Specialties named by more than one firm: brand strategy (6); identity design (4); identity systems (4); packaging (3); campaigns (2); naming (2).

In the list's order: Willoughby Design, Little & Company, Hanson Dodge, LPK, Duffy, Ologie, Planet Propaganda, TOKY, Design Ranch, Capsule, Firebelly Design, Fifty Thousand Feet, Oxide Design Co., Atomicdust, Grain & Mortar.

How to use what is published here

Start from the job, not the logo. Keep the two or three firms whose "why it's here" line matches the paragraph you wrote. Then ask each for one comparable piece of work and the name of the person who would do yours.

The order is editorial. It weighs longevity, named clients, scale and a clear specialism. It is not a score, and a firm cannot buy a position.

This category has no featured card. Nothing on the list is paid placement.

A blank price, a blank founding year or a blank leader is a gap in what could be verified. It is not a hint. The editorial standards say how a correction gets made.
